Phil Johnston worked as a broadcast journalist for eight years, earning three Emmy Awards for his work for his work, before becoming a filmmaker. He holds a B.A. in Journalism from the University of Wisconsin-Madison and an M.F.A. in film from Columbia University. He lives in Brooklyn with his wife and daughter and their transsexual cat, Wayne.

At Film Independent, we recognize that theatrical screenings provide the ideal experience for viewing the Spirit Award-nominated films. The free, members-only screening series in LA and NY are for voting members of Film Independent and IFP. Membership card and ID are required for admittance.
Voting members receive priority access. Members are allowed to bring one guest if seating is available. Guests will be seated on a space available basis.

Only Film Independent Members vote to determine the winners of the annual Spirit Awards. Film Independent members are a community of filmmakers, film industry leaders, and film lovers that champion artist-driven film.
