The Spirit Awards celebrates artist-driven filmmaking and recognizes the finest achievements of today's independent filmmakers.
At Film Independent, we recognize that theatrical screenings provide the ideal experience for viewing the Spirit Award-nominated films. The free, members-only screening series in LA and NY are for voting members of Film Independent and IFP. Membership card and ID are required for admittance.
Voting members receive priority access. Members are allowed to bring one guest if seating is available. Guests will be seated on a space available basis.

Only Film Independent Members vote to determine the winners of the annual Spirit Awards. Film Independent members are a community of filmmakers, film industry leaders, and film lovers that champion artist-driven film. Spirit Awards voting period: January 25, 2013–February 19, 2013 (9:00 am PST). All eligible voters received unique login information to gain access to our voting website on January 23, 2013. Download this year’s sample ballot.
Nominee Screening Series: Starting in January 2013, all voting members and a guest can attend free screenings of all nominated films in Los Angeles or New York. Many screenings include a Q&A with cast and crew.

Nominated for: Stella Artois Truer Than Fiction Award
Jason Tippet attended CalArts for his undergraduate degree where he directed Thompson, his first short documentary, which screened at Sundance 2010 and won the Jury Award at SXSW 2009.
Elizabeth Mims grew up in Austin, Texas and graduated from CalArts in 2010. There, she produced Thompson. Not to brag, but she was also freshman homecoming princess at Austin High School.
